If you have ever been pregnant, what was your most passionate food craving? Think back. When I was pregs with Camden it was buffalo wings. We lived near this pub, Big Ben’s, in South End Charlotte and they knew me on a first name basis since I stopped in so often. When pregnant with Brody, it was a Wendy’s Chocolate Frosty. This is kind of embarrassing since Frosties are fast food, full of sugar, processed and dairy-filled. It goes against everything I write about regarding a healthy lifestyle. I would take this dessert over any other decadent treat. It was my guilty pleasure during those nine months and I often gave in to the little voice in my head saying, “TREAT YO’ SELF.” But alas every time I ate one I felt bloated and gross like 15 minutes later. Isn’t doing something over and over again and expecting a different result the definition of insanity? Who cares…just get the insane pregnant woman her Frosty.
If you are a Frosty lover who lives the low-sugar lifestyle, I have got a fab copycat for you to try. I have tweaked and tested this Healthy Wendy’s Frosty Recipe Hack Using Cauliflower Rice and I drink it often. It has become my main staple smoothie. And before you go, “Gross…cauliflower rice in my smoothie?” Don’t knock it until you try it. Cauliflower rice is the ultimate healthy substitute and in smoothies it is no exception. The frozen cauliflower adds a creamy texture (rivals avocado when blended) and you won’t have even a faint hint of cruciferous taste. You can add this to any of your veggie or fruit smoothies and it will turn it into a silky texture. Promise. It’s magic. My favorite brand to use is Green Giant. I usually get the bulk bags from Costco. If you get the smaller bags from the grocery store, one bag will usually make 3 shakes.
The other ingredients that I want to talk about are a good protein powder and almond butter powder.
Protein Powder
I’ve been on a quest for the perfect protein powder for 2 years now and I finally found it two months ago. I should write a post on all of the ones not to purchase. You know how people have vitamin/supplement graveyards? Well I have a protein powder graveyard. I have purchased so many powders that taste gross and a bad powder totally voids any good smoothie recipe. Here is the only one I use now. It is low sugar, made with pea protein and just delicious. Honestly I have no idea if your smoothie will taste like a Frosty if you use any other protein powder. But I know it will if you use this one.
Almond Butter Powder
So almond butter powder is a beautiful staple for healthy desserts and smoothies. I also add it to my chocolate chia pudding. Can you substitute this powder with straight up almond butter in the recipe? Absolutely! But I’m just telling you what I do and the powder will make it taste like a Wendy’s Frosty.
Healthy Wendy’s Chocolate Frosty Recipe Hack Using Cauliflower Rice
Ingredients
- 1 scoop Chocolate Vega Essentials Shake
- 3/4 cup FROZEN cauliflower rice (I use Green Giant)
- 1 Tbs PB2 almond butter powder
- 1 1/4 cups unsweetened almond milk (play around with amount based on the thickness you want)
- 1 packet of organic Stevia In The Raw
- sprinkle of Himalayan sea salt (don’t forget to add this. It makes a difference. I think this is one of the reasons the Wendy’s Frosty is so addicting)
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 4 ice cubes (yep exactly 4)
Directions: Just blend until smooth and drink immediately. Please note that althought it will taste very similar to a Frosty, it will not have the exact, frozen dairy consistency of a Frosty. It will be more like a smoothie that you can sip or drink with a straw.
Since it’s hot here I like to have it outdoors as a creamy frozen treat. You can also drink it as a meal replacement, but you may want to add some additional healthy fats such as a tbsp of MCT oil.
