Recently I posted a question on facebook asking for recommendations on workout wear. I received a lot of great suggestions and yesterday I purchased some really wonderful basics.
I think that for women today, the importance of high quality, stylish workout clothing is way more important than it used to be. This seems to be for a number of reasons. 1) We are just more health conscious 2) The 9-5 workday is becoming extinct 3) We are constantly on the go 4) Social norms and the definition of “workplace casual attire” has changed. And women’s workout gear has evolved right along with the definition of “workplace attire.”
Because I work from home, it is critical that I wear something throughout the day that makes me feel “together” but also gets me motivated to workout. I know that if I’m wearing jeans, I may sacrifice a workout because I’d have to change into leggings and a sports bra before I went to the gym. Yep, this may be classified as laziness.
So here are some suggestions when buying stylish, wear everyday workout wear:
Find what flatters your body and your workout: If you have an apple shape and tight, ankle-hugging leggings don’t make you feel good about yourself, don’t wear them. Opt for a straight leg pant. Lululemon makes amazing pants and they will hem them for you for free.
Stick with basics: Good workout clothes are worth the investment. Just like the black blazer, trench and classic bag we may spend more on because of the timeless flexibility they bring to our wardrobe, pay a little more for the black, grey or neutral colored workout separates that you will spend so much of your life in. Leave the bright colors and patterns for you sports bras and tops. By doing this you will have a lot more combinations to work with.
Try before you buy: I’m all for internet shopping, but when it comes to workout wear, go to the store to try them on to find the brand that fits your lifestyle best.
Retire them over time: When your black leggings start to become “50 shades of Grey” or look like Madonna’s tights from the 80’s due to continuous washings, it’s time to let them go. This is speaking from experience (all my friends know I’m talking about my David Lerner leggings with the gold zippers).
If you are looking for fab workout gear, here are a few brands to check out: Lululemon, Nike, Reebok, Athleta, Under Armour, Alo, Zella at Nordstrom and Beyond Yoga. I have to add that CMH bracelets look wonderful with all workout gear, adding the perfect amount of healthy sparkle to your outfit. Hope you have a fabulous week. Seize the day! Chelsea
