Nothing puts me in the holiday spirit like baking up some magic in my parents’ kitchen on Easy Street (yep, really our street name). Snow outside, fire going, my mom, sister Ashleigh, and I drinking some La Crema Pinot Noir. Ash and I wanted to try to make something homemade. We were “so over” Christmas cookies and didn’t want to have to meticulously frost an entire cake, so we chose the decorative hot mess of the cake world–German Chocolate. The messier the frosting–the more artistic! We tested out a German Chocolate cake frosting recipe from the Allrecipes Spinner iPhone app. All 278 people that rated the recipe gave it 5 stars.
German Chocolate Cake Frosting
Ingredients
1 cup evaporated milk
1 cup white sugar
3 egg yolks, beaten with 1 teaspoon water
½ cup margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup flaked coconut
Directions
1) In a large saucepan, combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, margarine and vanilla. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until thick.
2) Remove from heat and stir in pecans and coconut.
3) Spread on cake while still warm.
The nutritional information isn’t angelic since this is just the frosting, not even the cake, but if you are going to splurge there is no better time than the holidays: Calories: 173, Fat: 10.3 Carbs: 20.
We served this for Christmas Eve dessert and I think we picked up another 12 5-star ratings to award to this App recipe!
Happy holidays, enjoy this wonderful down time with your families and remember to keep counting.
