People say that you wear 20% of your clothes 80% of the time. They’ve even come out with a brand called 80/20 based on this ratio. So, what better way to justify a recent shopping trip in NYC than to say I scored some “practical” pieces I can wear time and time again. Dare I even say “economical” if you divide how many times I wear them by retail price (proof that ANYTHING can be justified)!
Oh, and I threw in the couple items I bought that were definitely the “wear only 20% of the time” too, along with some of my favorite places to shop when I visit NYC. I’m not in any way trying to say I’m an expert when it comes to shopping here (you really need to live in the big Apple to make this claim) but our company, ful, used to have a showroom in the bag district so I was in NYC often.
Prada sport boots. Perfect for walking anywhere. Plus they’re black and go with anything.
Helmut Lang pants/leggings. These are classics so I bought in black pattern as well as grey. Helmut Lang ranks up there as one of my favorite brands (the others being Yigal Azrouel, Rick Owens, and Vince for 20% clothes to wear 80% of the time).
Oversized Shades. These can dramatically make your look. Just make sure you take care of your sunglasses. If you are one who misplaces or sits on the,m go for multiple pairs of the cheapies (there is nothing wrong with cheapies).
Patterson J. Kincaid Marilyn tank. This is so simple and light. Pair with a black bandeau. Very sexy sheer back and I love the neutral paneling. I purchased at Wink in Soho, but it’s also available at Shopbop.com
Matiko Okie Wedges in grey/gold. I got these at Purdy Girl in Soho, but they are also available on Revolveclothing.com. They are amazingly comfortable.
Some places you need to shop while in NYC if your heart pounds for shopping:
Flying A: (awesome necklaces, hats and vintage dresses)
Wink: (fun accessories)
LF Store: This is a treasure trove store. Quality of clothing isn’t that great, but you can find some cool statement pieces and wild shoes here.
Intermix on Madison: By far the best Intermix in NYC. Great for 80% wear staples and huge Helmut Lang collection. Also, find the perfect heel and sexy white tee here.
Barney’s CO/OP (Soho) as well as Barney’s flagship: Okay, if you are going to go to New York, you have to go to Barneys. Why? You just do.
Atrium: I didn’t go this last trip, but I love their denim
Opening Ceremony: Again, statement pieces
Bergdorfs: For all out fabulousness!!
Zitomer: This Pharmacy/Dept store has every type of skincare, hair care, makeup and candles known to man. Their color theme is shocking pink and black. Plus they sell Kerastase in huge vats (as an aside, I purchased some Kerastase only later remembering that I only had a carry on. Thanks Sarah, for putting this into your checked luggage!)
Again, these shopping spots are just suggestions based on individual style preference (although who doesn’t like Bergdorfs?!) Where do you like to shop when in NYC? Do you agree with the whole “80/20” philosophy? Have a wonderful week and remember to keep counting.
